In the Fall of 2016, Grammy Winning Artist, Macklemore, and then President, Barack Obama, starred in the MTV documentary Prescription for Change: Ending America’s Opioid Crisis to openly discuss the opioid epidemic our nation is facing. With the launch of the documentary, Macklemore also debuted his hit song “Drug Dealer,” featuring Ariana DeBoo, which dives even deeper into his past experience with addiction. The lyrics are powerful and strike home for millions of Americans who also share the same experience. Unfortunately many of whom are college students.

Yet here we are years later and America’s Opioid epidemic has been quickly spiraling out of control, with incidents of people dying of overdoses is actually spiking. In 2017, we saw more people die of drug overdoses than breast cancer and the majority of these deaths are from opioids. In 2020, drug overdoses were the leading cause of death among Americans under 50. We have learned from the opioid crisis that substance use disorder does not discriminate and one of our hardest hit demographics are traditionally college-aged students aged 18-30.

One of the hard truths that our society is starting to face is that our doctors are becoming drug dealers and some of them may not even be aware of it. The goal of this production is not only educate college students and prevent drug addiction, but raise awareness, break the stigma of addiction, and offer healing, hope, and treatment to those still suffering.

Based on over two decades of work with over 2 million college students, Collegiate Empowerment has been at the forefront of helping college students tackle some of the most difficult challenges they face during their collegiate career. Through thousands of hours of practical application of working with students, higher education professionals, and topic experts, Collegiate Empowerment has developed the ground-breaking program called, My Drug Dealer Was A Doctor, to help students & universities address the Opioid Crisis, not only American, but within Higher Education.
